Our sweet sister-in-the-Lord and friend, Carol Smoke went to heaven on Sunday, January 7th. She was surrounded by her children and grand-children.  Carol really was looking forward to seeing her Jesus face to face and then greeting her beloved husband and our dear departed Pastor, Jim  Smoke.

NOTE: When Carol's Celebration of Life service date is determined, I will post.

Laura’s Reflections: Danger Signs

I believe that I shared with you in the past, that I am part of a small group of women who are mentoring the “younger mothers” in our church under the direction of Lorraine Hart and Apples of Gold study.  The upcoming chapter is on Loving Your Children.  As I have already raised my children (as most of you have) I thought to myself “Wow, I wish I would have had this advice when I was a young mother.” There are many important habits and values I feel I failed miserably at. I was that hard-driven working mom, owned my own business, traveled a lot and thought I could do it all.  We were faithful in going to church, to Wednesday night services and summer church camps for the kids but family time for daily devotionals, reading the word and praying together were not staunchly kept. Things got in the way or let me say, we allowed things to get in the way.

It seems to me, many of the reasons we drift apart in a family are the same reasons people drift away from the Lord.

  1. Schedule is out-of-control.  We are busier than ever, especially with all the technology today. Conversations and rest seem like a sin. “It is vain for you to rise up early, to retire late, to eat the bread of painful labors; For He gives to His beloved even in his sleep.” Psalm 127:2

  1. Affection is misdirected. In other words, we place value on our “outside activities” rather than on our spiritual growth and God’s bride, the church. We care more about our sports, movies, dinners out and weekends off. "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.” Matthew 5:6

  1. Discouragement. Difficulties with family, friends, health, marriage, work, finances start to dishearten us. Instead of turning to our HOPE, that is in the Lord, we run. We take our eyes off the Lord, often hide and don’t seek wise counsel. “Wait for the LORD; Be strong and let your heart take courage; Yes, wait for the LORD.” John 27:14

  1. Abundance. We Americans have too much. Prosperity often lures us from the Lord. We don’t need Him and Satan is happy as he decoys us away from our Creator.  “But I am afraid that, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, your minds will be led astray from the simplicity and purity of devotion to Christ.” 2 Corinthians 11:3        “The world and its desires pass away but whoever does the will of God lives forever.” 1 John 2:17

I apologize first to my God and then to my children for allowing external influences to take my focus off His Son who died for us.  And, I want to thank God for His faithfulness, His mercy, grace and forgiveness. “Teach us Lord to number our days. That we may gain a heart of wisdom.” Psalm 90:12

Remember, if we see the DANGER SIGNS, it is never too late to pass on Godly wisdom to our children, grand-children, family and friends.

Staying Out of Danger!

There will be a Celebration of Life Service here at Desert Springs for Don Howard on Saturday, January 6 at 11 am. Don was owner of Cherokee Homes and years ago he built our Family Ministries building. Our thoughts and prayers for comfort and peace are with his family and friends.

Laura’s Reflections: Remember What the Lord Has Done
For me, 2017 was definetly a year filled with many trials and heartaches and to be brutally honest I just wanted it over.  While I reflected on the year the Lord began to speak to my heart. It was not easy to hear.

“Was I not with you? Did I ever forsake you? Did you already forget it was also a year filled with miracles, blessings and sweet times of communinion? Did you forget all the brothers and sisters that reached out to pray with you, for you, to help you? Did you forget that I commanded my angels to surround you and guard you?  Did you forget my faithfulness, mercy and grace? Did you forget the battles are not yours, but MINE? Did you forget the compassion I have for my loved ones? Did you forget that I am the strength of your life, your protector, your shield? That I uphold you with My righteous right hand?”

Ouch, that hurt. Really hurt, tears were shed and forgiveness asked (once again). I humbly thanked Him for every day of 2017 and for His never ending love.  A day later I read this prayer and felt it was exactly what I needed to pray:

A Prayer for the New Year
Lord, whether we’re leaving behind a year of joy and blessing or trials and difficulties, we pause to give thanks.
We thank You that You are always with us every single day of every single year.
Please remind us of Your presence in the year ahead, even when life is busy.
We are so thankful that we serve a God who makes things new and gives us the grace of fresh starts and new beginnings.
Be glorified in our lives this year.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
In Jesus Name,

Laura
