Laura's Reflection: Each day is a gift…

Waking up Monday morning to the terrible news of the Las Vegas massacre literally made me sick to my stomach.  I thought so much about the 50+ who thought they were attending a night of great country music and it ended up a night that they either met their Savior or not.  It was like a time bomb went off in my heart prompting me to get with it! Tell those you love, you love them. Tell those who don’t know Jesus, about Jesus! Don’t wait, it could be their last day or yours. I don’t want this to sound ominous but it’s reality.  In just one week there were killings in Paris, Canada & Vegas.  Time to wake up and use these tragedies to grow our belief in the sovereign will of God and strengthen our relationship with Him.  There is a wonderful book “Daring to Hope” by Katie Davis Majors and in it she says:

“He loves me and SO He allows me to feel pain that draws me to Him. And in the midst of the pain, He weeps with me for a world that is not as He intended, for sorrow that He did not design.

I can sing because I know what is coming.

I can hope because I know who is coming.

In the dark of the night, I have seen His face.

I want to be brave enough to hold out the hope of the Gospel to a world that is hurting and alone and afraid.

Not a hope rooted in the absence of pain or heartache or suffering.

Not optimism that looks for the best-case scenario or happy ending.

A true hope that rises from the full assurance that our Savior is on His way.

It’s not light yet, but I know Him, the One who is the Light.

And so in the dark, I will sing.”

Katie said what’s on my heart, so no more words are needed except the Word of God …

Psalm 90: 12 “Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”

Psalm 90:17 “May the favor of the Lord our God rest upon us; establish the works of our hands for us. Yes, establish the work of our hands.”

 Laura’s Reflection: Disconnect to Connect

We live in a world with 24/7 connections— iPhone/iPad/email/text/twitter/Facebook and on and on. Demands on our time from family, friends, job and on and on. The result is feeling burned out and overwhelmed but if we keep our priorities in line with God’s commands we can experience the PEACE of God that passes all understanding. Here is what God is teaching me:

1. Spend Time DAILY in Prayer, Reading the Word and Praise

The daily discipline of prayer, reading God’s Word, praising Him and thanking Him is the key to peace and unwavering confidence in knowing that God is in control. 

Philippians 4:6-7. “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand.”

2. Be Present in Every Situation

Disconnect to connect. Remember …  people first, tasks second.  This constant connection to texts, newsfeeds and emails means we are never truly present anywhere. When you are with other people, put the phone away. Engage in conversation. Be persistent.

Philippians 2:4 “Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.”

3. Get Organized

The problem with making lists is they often shackle us instead of release us. We have so many “to-do’s” on our list, it is overpowering. I just learned a new technique. Write down all the tasks that come to your head throughout the day. Big, small, insignificant, important. Then look at what must be done today and complete the three most important tasks. Celebrate your successes, but stay flexible.

Proverbs 16: 3“Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed.”

4. Take Time for Yourself & Give Yourself Space to Unplug

Even Jesus spent time away from people and teaching (Luke 5:16; Luke 4:42; Matthew 14:23). Rest isn’t an option; it’s essential and part of God’s design for your body and mind. Make time for activities that nourish you; cooking, painting, reading, golfing, spending time with friends. Don’t feel guilty about resting and nourishing yourself.

Mark 6:31 “Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he (JESUS) said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and rest.”’

5. Don’t Say Yes to Everything

One reason we are overwhelmed is we are doing too much, again this isn’t God’s plan. Jesus didn’t say yes to everyone. He didn’t cave in to the pressure of healing or discipling the entire world. We can’t do it all, we just can’t. Pray about what you are being asked to do and take God’s direction.

Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. Commit all your ways unto Him and He will direct your path.”

Maybe this reminder will help you to disconnect and experience more peace.  Satan wins when we are overwhelmed and over-stressed because we are not trusting in our Lord.  

Disconnect from the noise. Restore your life. You can do it!

Laura’s Reflection: I am turning into a hoarder. Want to join me?

Definition of a hoarder (noun): a supply or accumulation that is hidden or carefully guarded for preservation, future use, etc.

Now most of you are probably mortified at my admittance of being a hoarder, but let me tell you what and why I am hoarding. Here’s a hint, “I have hidden your word in my heart Lord, that I might not sin against You.”  That’s it – I am hoarding scriptures, passages and complete Psalms. For almost two years I have been memorizing verse after verse and now almost daily repeat over 150 Scriptures. It’s not with pride I am sharing this with you, it’s because it has become such an important part of my life and I want to encourage you to do the same. I’m gaining wisdom and power, seeing things more and more the way God does, drawing ever closer to the Lord and I proved to myself that I am not too old to do this!

The benefits are wonderful as I share verses to encourage others, to teach, comfort and sometimes even admonish in love. Daily, when I recite the attributes of the Fruit of the Spirit living in me … LOVE, JOY, PEACE, PATIENCE, KINDNESS, GOODNESS, FAITHFULNESS, GENTLENESS & SELF-CONTROL, I am more mindful of my Christian walk and how I represent Christ.

Also, I believe that God commands us to memorize Scripture:

·         “If you remain in me and my WORDS remain in you…” John 15:7 

·         “Let the WORD of Christ dwell in you richly…” Colossians 3:16

·         “Do not let this BOOK depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night…” Joshua 1:8

·         “Keep my WORDS and store up my commands within you…” Proverbs 7:1

Pastor Chuck Swindoll said this: “I know of no other single practice in the Christian life more rewarding, practically speaking, than memorizing Scripture. No other single exercise pays greater spiritual dividends! Your prayer life will be strengthened. Your witnessing will be sharper and much more effective. Your attitudes and outlook will begin to change. Your mind will become alert and observant. Your confidence and assurance will be enhanced. Your faith will be solidified.”

Amen and Amen to that! So, jump on this life changing practice with me…you won’t be sorry.

 Laura's Reflection: Be All You Can Be by Gary Morland

Our family was not destined to a straightline repetition and payment for one person’s sin.

Your family isn’t either.

The consequences of what happened upriver have altered our family, but they have not trapped us into a destiny.

Your parents and family are in the boat with you.

You get into a family that’s already flowing. They had parents and a family too, and on back it goes.

If we can blame our mom or dad or anyone else in our immediate family for how things turned out, they can do the same. If we pass something upriver, they can too. And on back upriver the blame goes.

Much of what our families become is because we’re part of what has gone before. We can’t escape it:

“I may __________, but so did my dad; I learned it from him.” True.

“My parents never taught me __________.” True.

“My mom never showed me __________.” True.

“My dad never __________; he always just __________.” True.

“My uncle __________ me, and so now I’m __________.” True.

These things are all true, and they may have affected us and changed the course of our lives.

But if I blame my family, and push responsibility for who and what I am onto them, the blame can go all the way upriver.

It goes downriver too.

From Brenda and me, through Myquillyn and Chad and Emily and John, through their kids and families, and their kids’ kids and families, the river flows. Each of them could pass the blame back to Brenda and me.

Most of us probably don’t consciously blame previous generations for how we turned out. But it’s a very subtle temptation because it gives us an excuse for our faults and failures.

It takes a lot of courage to face who we are and a great deal of responsibility to deal with it.

Blame lightens the load a little bit, doesn’t it? Saying to yourself “If only this hadn’t happened” sometimes makes life more bearable.

But blame is irrelevant. It only matters if you want an excuse for not taking responsibility for yourself.

It is helpful to understand the things that have contributed to your story, to what happened in your family upriver. These things may help to explain who you are today.

But it is your fault alone if you allow those circumstances to keep you from being all you can be.

You can stop the chain reaction.

Accept your family (or lack of one) as within God’s overall will for you, and accept His ability— and promise—to use it for good. Then let Him.

My dad’s dad (Pop) was an alcoholic. My dad was an alcoholic. I am an alcoholic. My children are not alcoholics.

If God can stop that chain with me, He can stop whatever is plaguing you with you.

All we have is our part of the river, right here, right now.

We put a canoe into this family story when we are born, and our canoe pulls to shore when we die.

But what we do while in the river—our actions, attitudes, words, values, accomplishments—will roll on.

They are our legacy.

 Laura’s Reflection: SINNING without Knowing?

My daughter wrote me a very thoughtful and loving note for Mother’s Day. She was over the Friday afternoon before, with her 3 little girls (OUR beautiful, perfect granddaughters) to swim and eat grapes and goldfish crackers! See picture of my tribe in the pool.  I was a bit tired I must admit and not filled with energy that I usually have or at least pretend to have. Oh, I was very happy to have them over and I knew it wasn’t lack of sleep or exhaustion, it was mental weariness. Why did I feel like this? AGAIN. In my daughter’s note she said ” Mom…I’m worried about you. I sense some sorrow or heaviness upon you…”and then she went on to say she is here for me and praying for me.

I’m usually good at masking my aching heart so I don’t trouble my husband, kids, friends. Guess what?  I didn’t do a good job of that on Friday.  I felt ashamed that I allowed things I can’t possibly fix to show outwardly and remove JOY from my heart. We even had some encouraging reports and doctor’s visits for Fred last week; yet I want to see results. I carry my family and friend’s problems too close to my heart. I ache for those battling disease or broken relationships. Face it, I like to fix things. But really? Who do I think I am? GOD?

I have since spent more time in prayer, reading God’s word and asking for help (“Cast your burdens on the Lord, for He will sustain you; He will never let His righteous be shaken.” Psalm 55:22) and He spoke to me. A truth I didn’t want to hear.

I lost JOY because I was sinning by losing the right focus. My focus should be on my loving relationship with Christ and HIS love, HIS power, HIS faithfulness, HIS plan, thanking HIM in EVERYTHING & in GLORIFYING HIM.  Listen, I don’t believe I was intentionally SINNING, I didn’t even see that.  But focusing on the things of the world and the problems in life is disobedience that robs your JOY.  Scripture commands us to “think on godly things.”

“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.” Philippians 4:8-9

So how can we have JOY during trials?

·         Focus on your faith and salvation! “Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious JOY, for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.” 1 Peter 1:8-9

·         Focus on eternity; trials are brief in comparison to eternity. “For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.  So, we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” 2 Corinthians 4:17-18

·         Focus on God’s sovereignty and purpose in trials.   “Consider it pure joy, when you face various trials; for the testing of your faith produces endurance…” James 1:2-3

·         Focus on our relationship with Christ; trials can bring deep intimacy with Christ. “Blessed is the man who perseveres under trials, because when he has stood the test, he WILL receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love Him.” James 1:12

Another lesson learned and another trespass forgiven.

Laura’s Reflection: Missing Mom

It’s only fitting that as we near Mother’s Day we take time to reflect on our mothers. My mom went to heaven just 6 years ago. There’s still a hole in my hearts that aches for her conversation, her wisdom, a warm hug and the taste of her Sunday pot-roast dinner. I walk by a bakery and see lemon meringue pie, mom’s favorite and another memory stirs. It’s these precious memories that we carry for our entire life and I am so thankful for them. I know many of you have been through the sorrow of losing your mom too, so you understand. It never goes away, does it?

Sadly, there are those who never experienced a godly, selfless, mother’s love, care and provision. Perhaps your mom left you for “another” life or battled an evil illness or addiction that stole her from you. If this is the case, I sincerely pray you have forgiven her and found peace in God’s perfect love. For GOD IS LOVE. GOD IS YOUR PROVIDER. GOD IS YOUR COMFORTER. I pray God filled every void you ever felt as you went to Him in prayer and looked to HIS word for direction and wisdom.

When I look back now at my mom, I know that she desired one thing only for me and that was that I walk with the Lord. When I strayed or tested God, and YES I did … I know she was on her knees. And you know the only thing I desire from my children? Is that they walk with the Lord. And if they stray? And they have. I am on my knees. If there is ever a calling for a mother (or father) it’s that … get on your knees and NEVER stop praying for your children (and grandchildren) and hold on to your HOPE. Remember, once they ask for God’s forgiveness, His word comes to pass “as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.” Our children move forward, we move forward. Thank you, mom. Thank you, Lord.

Proverbs 6: 20-23:

My son, keep your father’s command
    and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.

 Bind them always on your heart;
    fasten them around your neck.
When you walk, they will guide you;
    when you sleep, they will watch over you;
    when you awake, they will speak to you.
For this command is a lamp,
    this teaching is a light,
and correction and instruction
    are the way to life…

Laura’s Reflection: The Stones will Cry Out!

I’m reflecting on Palm Sunday, the Sunday before Easter, the beginning of Holy Week. It’s a day that I need to stop, to remember and to celebrate. The day Jesus entered into Jerusalem as Savior and King. As Jesus rode a donkey into the town of Jerusalem a large crowd gathered and laid palm branches and their cloaks across the road, giving Jesus royal treatment. Then hundreds of people shouted "Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!"

His last week on earth, how did he feel? We know Jesus allowed his followers to shout “Hosanna”, we know he wept over Jerusalem. We know he knew that prophecy was being fulfilled, right then, regarding his final week as man on this earth. He knew he would be nailed to the cross, and die for our sins. He knew in three days he would raise from the dead. He knew death had no hold on him! We know he loved us….

I pray the Bible verses listed below about Palm Sunday, both prophecy and actual event, will encourage you and inspire you to continue to live with Jesus as the King of your life and cry out “Hosanna, to the King!” If you don’t …“the stones will cry out.”

2 Kings 9:13

They quickly took their cloaks and spread them under him on the bare steps. Then they blew the trumpet and shouted, “Jehu is king!”

Zechariah 9:9

Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

Psalm 118:25-26

LORD, save us! LORD, grant us success! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD. From the house of the LORD we bless you.

John 12:12-19

The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna! ” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Blessed is the king of Israel!” Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, as it is written: “Do not be afraid, Daughter Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey’s colt.” At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written about him and that these things had been done to him. Now the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to spread the word. Many people, because they had heard that he had performed this sign, went out to meet him. So the Pharisees said to one another, “See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!”

Matthew 21:1-11

As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.” This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: “Say to Daughter Zion, ‘See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’ ” The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Hosanna in the highest heaven!” When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, “Who is this?” The crowds answered, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.”

Luke 19:28-44

After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. As he approached Bethphage and Bethany at the hill called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it.’ ” Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them. As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt?” They replied, “The Lord needs it.” They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it. As he went along, people spread their cloaks on the road. When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen: “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!” “I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.” As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it and said, “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes. The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side.
